Welcome to the story behind the portfolio. Discover what drives Michaela Jenkins in her passion for early childhood education, her unique approach, and her dreams for the future.

My path to early childhood education: My Introduction
My name is Michaela Jenkins, and I am currently an Early Childhood Education student at Oakland Community College. My passion for working with children began long before I entered the field professionally. Even as a child, I often said that one day I wanted to own my own daycare. I have always felt a natural connection with children, and it often seemed as though they gravitated toward me in almost any setting. Whether at family gatherings, social events, or everyday environments, children naturally felt comfortable around me and enjoyed interacting with me.
As the oldest of three siblings, I took on a caregiving role at a young age and often helped care for my younger brother and sisters. Beginning around the age of thirteen, I started regularly watching my siblings, which helped shape my natural ability to care for and connect with children. By the age of eighteen, I began watching other children for friends and family members as well. Over time, families in my community began trusting me to care for their children, allowing me to gain valuable experience working with children of many different ages and personalities.
Throughout high school and into adulthood, I continued caring for children and eventually began working more formally as a nanny and childcare provider. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of families and children, as well as gain experience in multiple childcare settings. These experiences have allowed me to develop important skills in child supervision, communication with families, and creating safe, engaging environments that support children's development.
My long-term goal is to open and operate my own childcare center where children can learn and grow in a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment. I hope to create a space where children feel supported, families feel confident in the care their children receive, and educators are able to provide meaningful learning experiences.
This portfolio reflects my academic work, professional experiences, and personal growth as I continue my journey in early childhood education. It represents my commitment to supporting young children during the most important years of their development and working toward my future goal of creating a high-quality childcare environment for children and families.

My unique approach to learning: My Philosophy
My passion for early childhood education comes from my experiences working with young children in both home and childcare settings. Through these experiences, I have seen how important a nurturing and supportive environment is during the early years of a child’s life. These early experiences play a critical role in shaping children’s confidence, curiosity, and overall development. Because of this, I have developed a strong desire to contribute to the field of early childhood education by creating environments where children feel safe, valued, and encouraged to learn.
My philosophy is centered on creating high-quality spaces for children, families, and educators. My core beliefs include creating safe and nurturing childcare environments, supporting play-based learning, providing developmentally appropriate experiences, supporting families and communities, and ensuring that every child feels valued and respected. I believe that early childhood education is not only about teaching children day-to-day in the classroom, but also about building the systems and environments that allow learning to happen. Teachers guide children’s learning through daily interactions, but strong leadership helps design the environments, policies, and supports that make those experiences possible. For this reason, I see my role in early childhood education as helping build nurturing, supportive environments where both children and educators can thrive.
Although many educators work directly in classroom teaching roles, my long-term goal is to create and lead a high-quality childcare environment where children, families, and educators feel supported. I hope to one day open my own childcare center where children can learn through play, exploration, and meaningful interactions with others. I believe that when children are provided with a positive and engaging environment, they are more likely to develop confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of learning. My philosophy of early childhood education is centered on the belief that every child deserves a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment. Children learn best through hands-on experiences, creative play, and positive relationships with caring adults. By providing opportunities for exploration, creativity, and social interaction, children can develop important skills that support their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth.
I also believe that strong partnerships between families and early childhood programs are essential. Parents and caregivers play an important role in children’s development, and open communication between families and educators helps create consistency and support for children’s learning. A quality early childhood program should support not only children but also the families and communities they belong to.
As I continue my journey in early childhood education, my goal is to help create environments that support children's development while also empowering families and educators. By fostering safe, inclusive, and engaging spaces for learning, I hope to contribute to the growth and well-being of young children during one of the most important stages of their lives.
